Local Citation Directories That Still Matter
A local citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website. A listing in a business directory counts, and so does a mention in a local news story. It does not need to link to you.
That changes how you should read this page. The link attribute (whether a link is followed, or marked nofollow so search engines ignore it) matters much less here than anywhere else on the site, because the value sits in the record itself: a business with this name, at this address, on this number, exists. A nofollow listing on a platform people actually check is doing its job.
What decides whether any of this works is consistency. Use the same details, written the same way, on every site. Search engines cross reference what different sites say about you, so a business described three slightly different ways looks like three partial records instead of one solid one.
Start with the three platform profiles at the top of this page and make your details identical across them. Then open the country page for where you actually trade. Anything in the bottom half of the table is optional.
Start here
If you have an hour and a business with a real address, do these three first, in this order. They are free, other systems read from their records, and getting the three identical to each other is worth more than your next thirty listings combined.
- Google Business Profile
This record decides whether you show up in map results at all, and nothing else on this page can stand in for it.
20 min, plus postcard or video verification
- Bing Places
Feeds Bing search and, more and more, the assistants that read from it. It can import your Google profile, so it takes minutes instead of an hour.
10 min, or 2 min if you import
- Apple Business Connect
Controls the map on every iPhone. Most businesses skip it, which is exactly why it is worth doing early.
15 min, verification by phone call
Before you move on, check that those three match each other character for character. Then open the country page for where you trade and work down it.
Every option, compared
Look at the Address and Country columns first. Every entry here expects a business with a physical location, so if you run a website with no premises, the general web directories page will suit you better.
Country works as a filter here rather than a heading, because many of these platforms run one site across several countries and listing them four times would only pad the table. The United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia each get a page of their own, with the local incumbents and local requirements that change the answer there.
Link type is included for completeness, but give it less weight here than anywhere else on the site. On these sites you are after the record, and a link is a bonus.

How we chose these, and where the numbers came from
Four factors decide where an entry sits, and the first carries more weight here than on any other page: whether other systems, such as map apps and data suppliers, actually read from the platform. A citation on a site nothing references sits on a page nobody sees, whatever its domain authority (a third party score that estimates how strong a site is).
Two of the four need a person to open a live listing instead of trusting the submission page, so the checking takes time, and the date against each row is worth reading.
Where the figures on this page came from
Domain authority and traffic figures on this page come from our own research on 17 August 2026. When one site showed up in more than one source with different numbers, we kept one figure and recorded the conflict, because averaging two figures that disagree gives you a third number that nobody measured.
The verification date on each row is the date that entry was last confirmed, and nothing appears here until it has been. Costs are as published on each site's own submission page on that date. None of this comes from an affiliate feed, and no entry is on this page because someone asked to be included.
The scoring weights, what a verification actually involves, and what gets an entry cut entirely are the same on every page of this site, so they are published once rather than restated here. Read the full methodology and money policy.
A business with one location and no listings anywhere
Set up the three platform profiles at the top of this page, then wait a fortnight before you add anything else.
The order matters. Those three are the records other systems read from, so if they are right first, everything you add later agrees with them. Add twenty listings before that foundation is in place and you can end up with twenty versions of your own address.
After the fortnight, open your country page and work down from the top until the effort column stops looking worth it. For most single location businesses that means somewhere between eight and fifteen listings in total, and the fifteenth is worth far less than the first.
A trade business, where the platform is the customer
If you are a plumber, an electrician, a builder or similar, the maths changes, and SEO is the smaller part of the case.
The trade platforms in the UK and Australia, and their equivalents in the US and Canada, are places customers search directly, so they bring you work as well as feeding search engines. They also vet their members. Expect to provide insurance documents, trade qualifications and in some cases a background check before a profile goes live, which takes days rather than minutes.
That vetting is what makes them worth it. A listing on a platform that checks its members means something to a customer, and it keeps its value long after the free directories have filled up with spam.
A business that has moved, rebranded or changed number
Your problem is the listings that are wrong, more than the ones that are missing, and adding new records on top of stale ones only makes it worse.
Search your old phone number in quotation marks, then your old address. Every result is still telling search engines something untrue about you, and old records tend to outrank new ones because they have been around longer.
Fix what you can edit, claim what you cannot, and only then start adding. It is slow, unglamorous work, and it will do more for you than any new submission on this page.
What to actually expect
Expect gradual change, over weeks rather than days.
Citations take away reasons for search engines to be unsure about you. You will notice it as things slowly stop being wrong, more than as a jump in rankings. The businesses that see the biggest change are the ones that started with contradictory records, and that describes most businesses that have been trading for a few years.
On their own, citations will not make you the top answer for a competitive local search. Your categories, your reviews, how close you are to the searcher and the quality of your website all matter more. Think of citations as the floor you build on.
The order on this page is our judgement against the factors above, applied to entries that have each been checked. We have not yet sent a site through all of these and timed it. That test is planned, and when it runs this section will show real counts: how many listings were approved, how long each took, and how many were still live ninety days later.
Who should skip this entirely
Skip this page if you have no physical address a customer could visit, or no local phone number. Almost every entry here expects both, and a submission without them is either rejected at validation or filed where nobody looks. The general web directories page is built for websites without premises.
Skip it too if you run a national ecommerce business with no premises open to the public. Your customers are not searching by location, so map results are not a channel you compete in.
If you have already done the platform profiles and your details are consistent, skip the long tail. The twentieth citation is worth a fraction of the third, and that hour is better spent on reviews or on your own site.
Finally, skip anything on this page that asks for money before it will list you at all. Paid extras on top of a free listing are normal and sometimes reasonable. A directory that will only record your business if you pay is selling you a page nobody reads.
Questions people actually ask about this
Does the listing have to link to my website?
No. A citation counts because it mentions your name, address and phone number, with or without a link. A link is a bonus. That is why the Link type column matters less here than anywhere else on the site, and why we suggest checking the Address and Country columns first.
How many citations do I actually need?
Fewer than you might think. The three platform profiles at the top of this page, plus the handful on your country page that local people really use, cover almost all of the benefit. For a single location business, eight to fifteen in total is a sensible target, and the returns drop off sharply after that.
What if my details are already inconsistent across listings?
Fix that before you add anything new. Search your business name in quotation marks, then your phone number on its own, then any old address or number. Correct the listings you control, claim the ones you do not, and only then start submitting. A fresh variation added to an inconsistent pile just makes the pile bigger.
Should I pay a citation building service?
Usually not. Those services create listings, which is the easy part. What decides the outcome is whether the new listings agree with what already exists, and a bulk service that skips checking your current records can add one more version of your details and make things worse. If you do hire one, ask about their audit step before you ask how many listings they create.
Do I need a separate listing for each of my locations?
Yes on the three platform profiles, where each location gets its own record and its own verification. On the smaller directories it is usually not worth it, and some will treat several submissions from one business as spam. Set up every location on the big three, then treat the rest as one business.
