Web Directories That Still Work in 2026
A web directory is a site that lists other websites by category, a bit like a phone book for the internet. You submit your URL, choose a category and write a short description. If the directory accepts it, you get a listing with a link back to your site.
That link helps in two ways. Search engines discover pages by following links, so a directory listing is one of the cheapest ways for a brand new site to get found and crawled. A handful of these directories also still pass ranking credit, which is the small SEO gain most people come looking for.
The best time to do this is once, early, in the week your site goes live and before you have any other links. It takes an afternoon and costs nothing. If your site already ranks for the terms you care about, you can skip it, and if you have a shopfront and local customers, the local citations page will serve you better.
Start with Ezilon, Jayde and SoMuch. All three are free, all three pass link credit, and at all three a person reviews your submission before it goes live. That review step is what separates a directory worth your time from one that publishes anything it receives.
Start here
If you have a new site and twenty minutes, do these three in this order and then close the tab. All three are free, all three pass link credit as far as we can tell from their stated policies, and at all three a person reviews your submission before it goes live.
- Ezilon
An editor reads submissions. Having a person decide your site belongs in a category was the original point of a directory.
5 min, live in 3 to 7 days
- Jayde
It has been running since the early 2000s without being penalised, which is rarer in this category than you might expect.
5 min, live in 3 to 7 days
- SoMuch
It has a review queue and a category structure that someone is clearly still looking after.
5 min, live in 5 to 10 days
If you sell to other businesses, add Kompass, and if you run a blog, add Blogarama. That is the full shortlist, and the rest of the page explains how we arrived at it.
Every option, compared
Start with the Link type and Cost columns. Between them they decide whether a row is worth your time, and they are the two details most lists leave out. Seven of the entries below are business listing sites rather than website directories. Manta, Hotfrog, YellowPages, YellowBot, ShowMeLocal and a few others want a business name, address and phone number, and they will either reject a plain website at the form or file it somewhere nobody looks. Check the Address column before you open a form. If you do have a business address, the local citations page covers these same sites with advice written for you. Where the Link type says Mixed, the site gives out both dofollow and nofollow links and the one you get depends on your tier, which the first sweep will settle.

| 1Blogaramablogarama.com | Dofollow | Free | Skip | Not required | 82 | 300k | Easy | Days | 22 Aug 2026 |
What submitting to Blogarama actually involvesBlogarama asks for a feed URL rather than a homepage, so it is built for blogs and not for business sites. It has the highest domain authority on this page, which is exactly the trap described in the methodology: a strong domain tells you nothing about whether your own listing page gets indexed. It is cheap to try, and afterwards it is worth checking whether your entry shows up in search.

What submitting to Jayde actually involvesJayde has been running since the early 2000s, and it looks its age. That is not a criticism, because the sites that survived that era did so by staying clear of penalties. It does mean the traffic figure in the row is the full picture rather than an underestimate. Submit, note the date and move on.
| 5Ezilonezilon.com | Dofollow | Free | Skip | Not required | 69 | 110k | Easy | Weeks | 22 Aug 2026 |
What submitting to Ezilon actually involvesEzilon is one of the few entries here where an editor actually reads submissions. That is why approval takes about a week, and it is also why the listing counts for more than an instant one. The directory is small, so do not expect visitors from it. What you get is a person deciding your site belongs in a category, which is what directories were originally for.

How we chose these, and where the numbers came from
Four factors decide where each entry sits, and the first two explain why a small directory with an editor can beat a large one that publishes anything. Blogarama has the highest domain authority on this page, yet it is not one of the three we suggest you start with. A strong domain does little for you if search engines never index the page your listing sits on, and a modest domain that files you properly is worth more.
Two of the four factors need a person to open a live listing and look, because a submission page can say one thing while the listing does another. That checking is slow, so the date against each row is the most useful thing in it.
Where the figures on this page came from
Domain authority comes from Moz and monthly traffic from Semrush, both compiled by our team on 12 August 2026. Both are third party estimates and will be off by some margin, which is why they sit to the right of the columns based on our own judgement. Cost, effort and approval times come from opening each submission form on the same date. Link attributes are our reading of each site’s stated policy and will be checked against live listings in the first sweep.
The scoring weights, what a verification actually involves, and what gets an entry cut entirely are the same on every page of this site, so they are published once rather than restated here. Read the full methodology and money policy.
A brand new site with no links at all
A brand new site has a problem that directories can genuinely help with, and at this stage that problem is getting crawled and found at all, rather than ranking.
Do Ezilon, Jayde and SoMuch, in that order. All three are free, all three are dofollow as far as we can tell, and at all three a person reviews submissions before they go live, which sets them apart from the instant entries. Allow about twenty minutes, including signing up for accounts.
Then stop there. It is tempting to submit everywhere on the theory that more links must be better, but twenty listings on sites that publish anything will not do twenty times what three reviewed listings do. Keep a note of what you submitted and when. In three months you will want to know which of these produced a listing Google actually indexed, and without that note you will have no way to tell.
You sell to other businesses
Kompass and GlobalCatalog organise entries by what you supply rather than where you are, so a buyer looking for a supplier can filter their way to you. That works differently from everything else on this page, and it is the route most likely to send you a real enquiry.
It also makes the form harder. Kompass asks you to pick a classification code before it accepts anything, and picking the wrong one is worse than not listing at all, because you end up filed alongside companies you do not compete with. Give it twenty minutes and read the options properly. If you are an early stage company rather than an established one, StartUs is a third option, though it expects a company story rather than a one line description.
You run a blog rather than a business
Blogarama is the only entry here that asks for a feed URL instead of a homepage, which tells you it was built for blogs, unlike most of this page. Submit your feed rather than your front page, and choose the narrowest category that genuinely fits.
Then wait two weeks and check whether your entry has been indexed. Blogarama has the highest domain authority on this page, so it is the best single test of whether a strong directory domain does anything for you. If you write about moving country, add JustLanded as well. If you do not, leave it out.
You have a shop, an office or a service area
Manta, Hotfrog, YellowPages, YellowBot, ShowMeLocal, Lacartes, Tupalo, CallUpContact and several others in the table are business listing sites. They list companies with an address and a phone number rather than websites. If you have both, they are worth your time, though for a different reason than links.
When the same business details appear consistently across many sites, local search takes that as a sign your business is real. Each of those mentions is called a citation rather than a backlink, and it counts even when the link is nofollow. Write your business name, address and phone number down once, exactly as you want them, and paste that same version every time, because one inconsistent copy can undo several correct ones.
Work through these from the local citations page rather than this one. It covers the same sites with notes on what each one wants from a business, plus some that never appear on web directory lists at all.
What to actually expect
Most of the instant directories will approve you, because they approve everyone. Fewer of those listings will end up on a page Google has indexed, and fewer again will pass any ranking credit, because a dofollow link on an unindexed page passes nothing.
So set your expectations accordingly. Directory listings will not make you rank on their own. What they do is help a new site get crawled, become findable by name and stop being invisible, for free and in an afternoon. For a site with no links at all, that is worth having. For a site that already ranks, it makes little difference.
We have not yet run our own submissions across this set, so the picture above is reasoning rather than measurement. When the first sweep is complete, a test report will replace this section with counts and dates: how many were approved, how many were indexed, how many kept a dofollow link and what changed over ninety days.
Who should skip this entirely
If your site already ranks for the terms you care about, you can skip this page. At that stage general web directories add very little, and an hour spent earning a link that someone chose to give you is worth more.
Skip it if you are looking for visitors. With the possible exception of Kompass, where business buyers search for suppliers, nobody really browses these sites. The listings are there to be found by search engines, not by people.
If you run a physical business and your customers find you locally, use the local citations page instead. Several of these entries appear there too, with notes on what each one wants from a business rather than a website.
Finally, skip any entry here that starts asking for money. Every directory on this page is free on purpose. Paid general directories were exactly what Google removed from its index in 2012, and there is no reason to pay for the next one.
Questions people actually ask about this
Do general web directories still work in 2026?
A handful still accept websites and still pass ranking credit, and those are the ones listed here. What stopped working is submitting to hundreds of them at once. Google cleared most of this category out of its index in 2012, and much of what survived became business listing sites. Three good directories will do far more for you than thirty poor ones.
Why are Manta and Hotfrog on a web directory list?
Most published lists include them, but they do not really belong there. Both list businesses with an address and a phone number rather than websites. If you have an address, they are worth doing as citations rather than as links. If you do not, your submission will either fail at the form or end up somewhere with no traffic.
Should I ever pay for a general web directory listing?
No. Paid general directories were exactly what Google penalised in 2012, and most of the ones still charging are selling a value that disappeared back then. Every entry on this page is free for that reason. Paid listings in a specialist industry directory are a separate question, and those can be worth it.
How many of these should I submit to?
Three, or five if you sell to businesses or run a blog. The directories with a human editor are worth doing properly. The instant ones are only worth doing if you still have patience left afterwards. Submitting to every entry here will not give you a proportionally better result, because most of those listings will not get indexed.
Will a nofollow directory listing do anything at all?
For rankings, not directly. For a local business, yes, because local search looks for consistent name, address and phone details across sites whatever the link attribute. For a website with no address, a nofollow directory listing makes almost no difference, which is why the Link type column sits second in the table.
How do I tell whether a listing actually worked?
Wait two weeks, then search Google for the directory’s domain together with your site name in quotes. If your listing page appears, it is indexed and the link is doing whatever it is going to do. If it does not, the listing exists but Google has never seen it, and that is the most common outcome in this category.
