Web Directories That Still Work in 2026
Most web directories will do nothing measurable for your rankings, and a good number of them will not even get your listing indexed. This page is the set that survived our last sweep, with the link type and the real price checked by hand rather than copied from the site's own marketing. If you are running a new site with no budget, start at the top of the table and stop when the effort column stops looking worth it. Everything below the halfway mark is optional at best.
What changed in the 28 Jul 2026 sweep
- RemovedTwo entries came off this sweep. One submission form has been returning a server error since June and the other now charges for what used to be free.
- DowngradedOne entry moved from High to Medium after its outbound links went nofollow in April without any announcement.
- AddedOne addition, a web directory that has held a dofollow link and a real editorial process through three consecutive checks.
- RecheckedEvery remaining entry was opened by hand and its live listing inspected. Dates in the last column are per entry, not per page.
Why most advice on this underperforms
Almost every list of web directories you will find was assembled once, published, and never touched again. That is why the same names keep appearing years after they stopped working. The problem is not that the advice was wrong when it was written. The problem is that the general directory business collapsed after the 2012 penalties and the survivors quietly changed what they offer, and nobody goes back to check.
The second problem is that the lists never say what happens after you submit. A web directory can have a high domain authority and still bury your listing on a page that Google has never indexed, which means the link exists and does nothing. Authority tells you about the site. It tells you nothing about the page your link will actually sit on, and that page is the only one that matters to you.
The third problem is money. A lot of these sites quietly moved from free to paid, or kept a free tier and made it nofollow while the paid tier stayed dofollow. That distinction is the single most useful thing anyone could publish about them, and it is almost never in the list you are reading. It is the second and third columns of our table for exactly that reason.
This is placeholder text. The real version of this section has to say something specific about web directories that would be false about any other category on this site.
How we chose these, and what the score means
The score out of 100 is four things, weighted. It is not a measure of how good the site is. It is a measure of whether submitting to it is worth your afternoon, which is a different question and the only one this page is trying to answer. An entry can have a high domain authority and score badly here, and several of them do. Where a figure came from a third party tool it is labelled with the tool and the date it was pulled, because a number without a date is not a fact.
Word budget: 96 words, target 100 to 200.
| Factor | Weight | Source and as-of date |
|---|---|---|
| Is the listing page actually indexed | 35 percent | Checked by hand with a site: query, 28 Jul 2026 |
| Link attribute on a live listing | 30 percent | Page source inspected by hand, 28 Jul 2026 |
| Cost against what you actually get | 20 percent | Submission page pricing as published, 28 Jul 2026 |
| Effort to complete a submission | 15 percent | Our own submissions, timed |
What verified means here
Verified means a human opened a live listing on that site, looked at the page source, and confirmed the link attribute with their own eyes on the date in the last column. It does not mean a script checked that the submission page returns a 200. Where we could only confirm the paid tier, the entry is marked as such rather than given the benefit of the doubt.
What gets an entry cut entirely
An entry is cut entirely if its listing pages carry a noindex tag, if the submission form has been broken for two consecutive sweeps, or if it requires a link back from a page we would not want a reader to create. Low traffic on its own is not a disqualifier. A web directory with modest traffic and a real editorial process is worth more than a large one that publishes anything.
The list
The second and third columns are the ones to read first. Link type and Cost are the two facts almost nobody publishes honestly, and between them they decide whether an entry is worth your time. Everything else on the row is context for those two.

What submitting to Crunchbase actually involvesCompany database used by press and investors, not really a directory. Placeholder note. The real one goes here and has to say something a reader could not work out from the row itself: what the submission form actually asks for, how long approval really took when we did it, whether the listing ended up on an indexed page, and whether anything about it has changed recently. Domain authority figures are from Moz, pulled 28 Jul 2026. Monthly traffic estimates are from Semrush, same date. Both are estimates and both are wrong by some margin, which is why they sit to the right of the columns that are not estimates. Link attributes and prices were checked by hand on live pages rather than taken from any tool. Where we could not confirm something we have said so in the row rather than guessed.
The ones we removed, and why
These came off the list. We publish the removals because the sites that make money from featured placement structurally cannot, and because a list that only ever grows is a list nobody is checking.
Word budget: 34 words, target 40 to 120.
Best of the Webbotw.orgRemoved 28 Jul 2026
Now $299 a year and the link went nofollow in 2024. Nothing left to recommend.
Blogarama Directoryblogarama.comRemoved 28 Jul 2026
Submission form has returned a server error on every check since June.
World Site Indexworldsiteindex.comRemoved 28 Jul 2026

Best for a brand new site with no links at all
Placeholder section. The real one names three or four specific entries from the table above, says who should use them and in what order, and explains why that order is different from the generic advice. It is the part of the page that makes it a guide rather than a table, so it has to name entities and make a judgement rather than describe a category.
For running a new site with no budget, the shape of the answer is usually the same: two entries worth doing properly, one worth doing if you have a spare hour, and a long tail worth skipping entirely. Saying which is which, by name, is the whole job.

What to actually expect
Here is the honest version, and it is placeholder text until we have actually run the test. The real section reports a submission run we did ourselves, with dates and counts: how many we submitted to, how many approved, how many of those listings Google indexed, how many kept a dofollow link, and what happened to rankings afterwards. The expected answer is that most of them approve, a minority get indexed, a smaller minority pass any credit, and rankings do not move measurably from this alone.
That is not a reason to skip web directories entirely. It is a reason to spend an afternoon on them rather than a fortnight, and to treat the ones with real editorial review differently from the ones that publish anything. Anyone telling you a directory run will move a competitive keyword is selling something.
This section must not be written from assumption. It is the strongest evidence on the page that we test rather than compile, and inventing its numbers would be the one thing here that could not be defended.
Word budget: 177 words, target 200 to 300.
Before you submit to any of these
Have these ready before you start. Doing them once up front turns a submission from fifteen minutes into three, and the consistency matters more than you would think, particularly for anything that gets matched against other records.
- Your business name written exactly the same way everywhere, including punctuation
- A description at three lengths, roughly 50, 150 and 300 words
- A logo as a square PNG and a wide version, both under 1 MB
- A contact email on your own domain rather than a free provider
- The exact URL you want listed, with or without a trailing slash, decided once
- A spreadsheet with the date you submitted and the state of each application
Who should skip this entirely
Skip this page entirely if you are working on a site that already ranks for competitive terms. At that point web directories are noise, and the hour is better spent on anything that produces a link somebody chose to give you.
Skip it too if you are hoping for traffic rather than links. With a handful of exceptions named in the table, nobody browses these sites. The listings exist to be found by search engines and by the occasional person who lands on a category page from a search.
And skip it if you are about to pay for placement without checking the link attribute first. Paying for a nofollow listing is a fine decision if you want the visibility and you know that is what you are buying. It is a bad one if you think you are buying ranking credit.
Word budget: 142 words, target 150 to 200.
Questions people actually ask about this
Do web directories still help SEO in 2026?
Placeholder answer, 40 to 70 words in the real version. It has to be specific to web directories rather than a general statement about link building, because four of the questions on this page need to score 2 on the swap test and a generic answer scores 0.
